These Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Footballs are made with eggless cookie dough and are the perfect dessert for football watching over the next few weeks – packed with playoff and championship games!

I haven’t talked much about the Carolina Panthers this season. Honestly there hasn’t been that much to talk about. They had kind of lousy season with lots of injuries. And we’ve been so busy, I haven’t even gotten to go to a game this year. We were in town for one and the hubs went, but I was visiting with a friend who was in town from Australia.
Crazy enough though, our division was all lousy and now the Panthers are in the playoffs! We cheered them on last Saturday and we’ll be doing the same thing this Saturday. And if they win again, we’ll be cheering them on while eating even more of these cute little footballs.
Panther football is kind of a big deal in my family. My older brother is a Falcons fan, but he’s on his own. Though the hubs and I live in Atlanta now, I grew up in Charlotte.
When the Panthers became a team back in 1995, my dad became a PSL owner and we started going to games every week. Their first year, they didn’t have a stadium built yet so the played their home games at Clemson stadium. My dad drove us to all of them from Charlotte – about 2 hours each way.
I could’ve cared less at first. I was in fifth grade. But by the second year, I was fan. I was also in love with Kerry Collins – the Panther’s first quarterback. 🙂 Panthers football was also one of the first ways I learned to relate to my dad.
It’s now such a big thing, my dad wouldn’t miss a game unless he literally couldn’t walk. And even then – we’ve ridden the handicapped elevator up to the seats before. 🙂
My parents have been tailgating so long, they’ve got it mastered. Even when I’m not there a few of my friends, who regularly go to games, tailgate with my family. I was getting text messages with pictures of all of them at the tailgate last week before the game. #jealous
Too bad I wasn’t in town. I could’ve brought these cute little cookie dough footballs. My mom would’ve been thrilled. She’s always asking for easy football treats she can make for tailgating.
And while I love them as footballs, you could really turn this cookie dough into balls, or any other shape.
The recipe is made much like making any other cookie dough, but without leaveners and eggs. The dough is fairly thick, so it’s easy to work with. After making the dough and shaping it into footballs, it’s best to refrigerate it so that they’re firm for dipping in chocolate.
The hardest part of making these is probably the dipping. I recommend using a good chocolate, such as candiquick. It melts really smoothly, making the dipping a much easier job. You could also use the Wilton brand candy melts, or almond bark. I just melt it right in a bowl.
I like to use a toothpick to dip my footballs in the chocolate. I decided putting the toothpick in at an angle worked best. It’s a little trickier on a toothpick – you have to have some patience. But it works. I stick the dough into the bowl with the chocolate, spoon chocolate over it, then use the toothpick to tap the side of the bowl and shake off the excess chocolate.
Another option is to use a fork. My friend Dorothy made a great video that you can check out if you want to try that method – How to Dip Candy and Truffles Video Tutorial.
The chocolate dries pretty quickly then you can add some football strings and they are ready to go! Seriously, could they be any cuter?

Ingredients
- 3/4 cup Challenge Dairy salted butter, room temperature
- 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 cups all purpose flour, toasted

5. Shape balls of cookie dough about one tablespoon in size into footballs, then place on a parchment lined cookie sheet.
6. Refrigerate balls for about 30 minutes, or until firm.

11. Pipe the vanilla candiquick onto the footballs to create the strings. Allow to dry.

Awesome idea! So yummy! Thanks for sharing. My first time on your blog 🙂
Some yummy recipe. Very interesting and eye catching. I have learnt a lot about cake preparation technique in this article and thanks to Lindsay for her generosity. Once again thanks.
Hey! I see you are using salted butter… If I use unsalted, how much salt would I need to add to compensate? Trying to avoid a store run…
Thanks!
Use 1/4 tsp of salt. 🙂
Making these today! Do you store them in the fridge? On the counter?
I usually store them in the fridge and serve them at room temperature.
Is it absolutely necessary to use dark brown sugar?? Can I substitute the 1/2cup of dark brown sugar with 1/2cup Light instead?
Yes, you can.
What happens if you bake them first, let them cool and then dip them? I don’t like cookie dough, I know I’m nuts. Thanks, Gina
I haven’t tried it but it’d likely spread and not hold the football shape.
My wife really loves Chocolate and I am looking for great recipe to make for her. Will try your recipe at tomorrow. Thank for sharing it!
