I’m switching things up a bit today with a different kind of recipe. This one is for our four legged doggy friends. However, even though I obviously intended these peanut butter banana dog treats for dogs, we humans could eat them, too. In fact, you could eat it alongside your dog. The hubs does. 😉

I used to buy our sweet black lab, Jessie, frozen doggy ice cream treats at the grocery store. But after falling in love with the ease of One Ingredient Banana Ice Cream, I realized I could totally use that as the base for a really tasty dog treat. I gave it a try several years ago and Jessie loved them, so now they’re a regular summer treat. Plus, it’s cheaper to make myself.

And these peanut butter banana dog treats are so easy to make. Once you’ve made your banana ice cream from frozen bananas, you add some peanut butter, then freeze it. Does it get any easier?!

Why Make These Frozen Dog Treats

  • Dogs love them! This, for me, is the most important part! Jessie obviously loves these peanut butter banana dog treats, as I’ve been making them for her for years. But so has every other dog I’ve seen try them. If your dog loves peanut butter, I bet they’ll love these!
  • Only 2 ingredients. These homemade dog treats are made with just two ingredients – peanut butter and banana. I like to add a regular dog treat bone on top but that’s totally optional.
  • Quick & easy. It takes me a whopping 5 minutes to whip up four of these frozen treats. The hardest part (for me and Jessie!) is waiting for them to freeze completely.

What You’ll Need

These frozen dog treats are made with just 2 main ingredients. So easy! Be sure to scroll down to the recipe box at the end of the post for the amounts.

  • Bananas – This is a great opportunity to use up those overripe bananas on the counter. Ripe bananas mash easier than green ones, which is better for this recipe.
  • Peanut butter – Any creamy peanut butter that your dog already loves (or whatever you keep on hand) works. Just be sure it doesn’t contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs and can sometimes be found in certain peanut butters, such as low-sugar or high-protein versions.
  • Mini dog treats – These are totally optional but I love to add a few little bones to the top of each peanut butter banana dog treat.
  • Plastic cups – The peanut butter banana mixture is poured into and then frozen in mini plastic cups. Use whatever size you want the treat to be, but if they are larger, you’ll get less treats. You can also use paper cups, but you’ll want to pull it off the treat before you give it to the dog.

Proper Storage

Peanut butter banana dog treats can be kept in the freezer for a month or two. I like to keep them on the door of the freezer so I can just grab one whenever we want to give Jessie a little treat.

Ingredients

  • 4 bananas
  • ½ cup peanut butter
  • 4 plastic mini cups*
  • Mini dog bones (optional)

Instructions

  • Peel and slice your bananas, then freeze in a freezer safe container.
  • Put frozen banana slices in a food processor and blend until smooth and creamy, like soft serve. You’ll need to scraped down the sides a few times, since it will get pretty thick.
  • Stir in the peanut butter and mix until combined.
  • Divide the peanut butter banana mixture between 3-4 cups, top with a mini dog bone, if using, and freeze. Serve when frozen.

Notes

Plastic cups – You could use paper cups, but I’d take the paper off before giving it to your dog.

Now I’m afraid of the peanut butter.  How can I be sure it doesn’t have Xylitol in it?  I don’t always believe labels.  What brand do you use?

  3. Anyone making this recipe or others with peanut butter, please make sure your peanut butter doesn’t contain Xylitol!

‘Xylitol, a sweetener used in many foods, including peanut butter, yogurt, toothpaste and chewing gum, is safe for humans but potentially deadly for dogs. If ingested, it can cause seizures, liver failure and death, warned one animal hospital, which called xylitol “extremely toxic” to dogs’

I’ve been doing this for my dogs for years! They love it! I have been using ice cube trays though because one of my dogs was very small (she passed recently) it was a perfect serving. I simply mashed any bananas they did not eat and we’re getting to ripe with their favorite crunchy (creamy is fine) PB. Fill the trays and pop them in the freezer. You can put non stick cooking spray or use a napkin and a dab of cooking oil to line the tray for a much easier removal process and store them in a freezer bag! Nava loves fruit but I’ve yet to experiment with other blends. Such a great way to keep them cool in summer, super easy to make, and healthy! Glad someone else had this idea!

  7. Ah, okay. I just wondered if there was perhaps some sort of thing that could only be achieved by pre-freezing, blending, and re-freezing. Like maybe it would effect the texture or consistency or something. My parents also have a lab and he’s maybe 60lbs whereas my pit bull and American bulldog are ~75lbs and ~95lbs respectively. I guess I’m just used to most people having smaller dogs than I do. Lol! That serving size ought to be just fine for these two. Better too little than too much, at least for my two. Neither looks like they’ve missed any meals, that’s for sure! ???? I’m hoping making them homemade might not only reduce the price but also the fat content.

Love this recipe!! My pup loves when I leave chunks of banana in it!

  8. Is it necessary to slice and freeze the bananas before blending them up and adding in the peanut butter or could you just toss in the bananas, blend til smooth, add in the peanut butter and blend til it’s mixed well, and then pour it into cups to freeze it? I generally use my Ninja for everything that needs to be blended/mixed/crushed/etc. How big is your dog? Can you give me an approximate serving size for this for her?

    1. You could probably just freeze it after blending it all and it’d be fine. Our dog is a 90 lb labrador. I usually make about 4 treats out of this. You could adjust that if you’re dog is smaller.

Currently making these for my puppy! Waiting for them to freeze but he loved licking the spoon Lol. They look so good, and Bunker the Pup approves!

Hi can I mash the bananas instead of putting it in a food processor because I dnt have one.

    1. Yes, definitely. I’ve done that before when I don’t feel like pulling out the food processor 🙂

  11. Bannas and peanut butter are my dogs favorites things!! ( and cheese)

I use a container non fat regular yogurt, 2 mashed banana , half cup natural peanut butter. Fill ice cube trays fromblender and freeze. What’s left I add granola and eat myself. Very healthy recipe for the pups

  13. Oh I love these! I made some treats like this with greek yogurt & peanut butter for my pup, but I didn’t think about bananas!
