What is a Spice Cake?

This incredibly moist cake is full of warm fall spices and covered in a lovely cream cheese frosting!

Simple Ingredients

You'll need a few ingredients to make this easy recipe, so round them up and let's get started!

Mix Ingredients

Combine the dry ingredients in one bowl. In another, cream the butter, oil, sugar, vanilla, and eggs together.

Combine

Mix half of the dry ingredients into the batter, then add milk and applesauce, mixing until well combined.

Finish the Batter

Add remaining dry ingredients until smooth, scraping down sides as needed, and avoid overmixing.

Bake

Divide the batter evenly between the cake pans and bake for 20-25 minutes. Then let cool completely.

Make the Frosting

Combine the cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract to make the frosting. Then remove the cake domes.

Assemble the Layers

Place the first cake layer on a serving plate, spread 1 cup of frosting, add the second layer and another cup of frosting, and top with the third layer.

Frost the Cake

Frost the top and outside of the cake with the remaining cream cheese frosting, and pipe a border around the top edge.

Enjoy!

Decorate the cake with some chopped pecans, if desired.
