Peppermint Chocolate Cake

What is a Peppermint Chocolate Cake?

This easy recipe is made with three layers of moist chocolate cake that are filled and frosted with peppermint buttercream and peppermint pieces!

Simple Ingredients

You'll need a few ingredients to make this easy recipe, so round them up and let's get started!

Mix Dry Ingredients

Whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.

Add Wet Ingredients

Stir the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, vanilla and hot water into the batter.


Divide batter between cake pans and bake for 30-33 minutes. Then allow cakes to cool completely.

Make the Buttercream

Beat the butter until smooth, then mix in the powdered sugar, heavy cream, vanilla extract, peppermint extract, and salt.


Cut domes from cakes. Set first layer on plate, spread frosting, and sprinkle peppermint. Stack second layer, repeat. Add final cake, and frost outside.

Make the Ganache

Heat heavy whipping cream until boiling, then pour over chocolate chips, let sit for 2-3 minutes, and whisk until smooth.

Decorate the Cake

Drizzle chocolate ganache around cake edge, let it firm, then pipe shells with remaining frosting around top edge and sprinkle with peppermint pieces.


Serve at room temperature or only slightly cool.
