What is an Angel Food Cake?

This popular American dessert is a light, airy sponge cake made from egg whites, cream of tartar, flour, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt!

Simple Ingredients

You'll need a few ingredients to make this easy recipe, so round them up and let's get started!

Sift

Combine half of the sugar, flour, and salt. Sift them together 5 times.

Whip the Egg Whites

Whip egg whites on low speed until frothy, then add cream of tartar and vanilla extract, and increase speed to medium.

Whip Some More

Add remaining sugar, whipping on medium-high speed until stiff peaks form.

Gently Fold

Gently fold the flour mixture into the egg whites 1/4 cup at a time. Sift the flour mixture as you add it.

Pour Into Pan

Pour batter into tube pan, smooth it out, and use a knife to break up air bubbles around the pan's exterior and interior walls.

Bake and Cool

Bake for 28-30 minutes, then remove it from the oven and turn it upside down to cool.

Invert It

Turn the cake right side up, loosen it from the pan with a knife or spatula, and invert it onto a serving plate.
