Don’t let the color fool you, this Green Smoothie tastes anything but green. It is sweet, refreshing and the perfect way to begin the New Year – and your mornings.

We rang in the new year with our small group. It was laid back, but a lot of fun. And of course there was champagne.
I have to say though, I’m glad the holidays are over. I love them and I love seeing all of our family, but man was it busy. And after all the food I stuffed myself with, I’m ready to get back into the swing of things and back into the gym. I’ve been slacking lately just trying to keep up with everything that’s been going on since Thanksgiving.
I’m not really a believer in New Year’s resolutions, since it seems most people don’t keep them. 😉 I also think that if there’s something you think you need to do, a change you need to make, there’s no time like the present. Why wait till a new year comes around?
But it just so happens that I’m tired of all the junk I’ve been eating and not being in the gym lately and I’m ready to get back into it – which feels resolution-y.
I was back in the gym yesterday and it felt great. It feels even better when followed up with a delicious smoothie.
The hubs and I will randomly go through smoothie phases. We sort of got it from my dad.
My dad will make a big batch of smoothies and then pour them in individual cups for the week, freeze them all and then pull one out each day. I know a lot of people love the idea of freezing ingredients in baggies so that you can pull one out each day and make a fresh smoothie, but honestly. I don’t have time to do that every morning, nor do I want to have to wash the blender every day. We’ve used my dad’s method a number of times and love it.
So while this green smoothie recipe only makes 2 large smoothies, you could definitely double up on it and turn it into a few more and freeze them all.
Or eat them fresh. Fresh is tastier.
And this smoothie packs a bunch of fruit and veggies. It’s basically, like, most of the fruit and veggie servings you need in a day. I love that. All in one hit. Easy.
And you don’t taste the spinach and kale. When I first handed this green smoothie to the hubs, he gave me a look like I was trying to kill him. He’s suspicious of all things green. But then he tasted it and loved it! All a sudden he was curious about what was in it and drank the entire thing. So yea, it’s green but doesn’t taste like it. It just packs all kinds of vitamins and things that are good for you.
The main flavors come from the bananas, strawberries and pineapple. I recommend having them all frozen beforehand, especially the bananas. Did you know that frozen bananas, when pureed, create a smooth ice cream like base that is perfect for smoothies? It’s true. And the best thing ever. I bought fresh fruit (which was on sale – yay!) and then cut it up and froze it. The more frozen the fruit, the thicker the smoothie. And I like mine thick!
I also added some greek yogurt and almond milk for some protein – without the powder.

- 2 peeled, sliced bananas, frozen
- 1 cup chopped strawberries, frozen
- 1 cup chopped pineapple, frozen
- 1/2 cup greek yogurt (about 4-5 oz)
- 1 1/4 cup spinach
- 1 1/4 cup kale
- 1/2 cup almond milk
Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until well combined, 2-3 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the blender, as needed. You can add more almond milk if it’s too thick.
