Orange Creamsicle Puppy Chow

So last week the hubs and I were visiting with his family out in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It was so nice to get away for a few days and despite forecasts, we had great weather.

It was a fun trip filled with beautiful wild animals. What kind, you ask? The wild animals I speak of are the wild horses of Corolla, NC and the crazy number of dolphins we saw swimming right off the beach every day we were there. If you know me well, you know how much I love dolphins and how excited that makes me.

If the water hadn’t been super cold still (like, you still need a wet suit to go in) I totally would’ve swam out to them in hopes that they’d take me as one of their own. There had to be at least 20 of them frolicking in the water just before where the waves were breaking. We saw them jump 6 times! Six! We even saw a pair of them jump together – twice! Like I said – I was excited. Like jumping up and down and screaming every time they jumped excited.

But back to the horses. I had never seen wild horses before and they are smaller than the horses I’m used to seeing, but they are beautiful! They are in a protected area, but there are still people chillin’ on the beach right down from where the horses are chillin’. One of the coolest things ever.

So our first beach trip this summer was successful and has officially gotten me excited about the warm weather. It seems to finally be sticking around. And orange creamsicles totally scream warm, beautiful summer days to me. Since it’s been a while since my last puppy chow recipe and I’m such a fan of the ease in making it, I decided to celebrate the warm weather with Orange Creamsicle Puppy Chow.

Tips for Making Orange Creamsicle Puppy Chow

I like to use colored candy melts in my puppy chow if I can to add some extra color. So for this mix, I actually doubled up the creamsicle flavor by using orangesicle cake mix and orange cream flavored Wilton candy melts (I found them at Michaels). If you can’t find the flavored candy melts, you could also use orange colored vanilla candy melts if you still want the color. If you can’t find either, or color is unimportant, just use white chocolate or almond bark. The orangesicle cake mix will still give your puppy chow great creamsicle flavor.

So get to it, because this puppy chow is just pure fun! The creamsicle is delightfully fruity. The recipe is based on my Strawberries and Cream Puppy Chow, so if you were a fan of that, you should love this!

Description

This Orange Creamsicle Puppy Chow is amazing! It’s the perfect sweet snack to munch on whenever and wherever you want! An easy treat made with just 5 ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 5 oz orange colored candy melts (Orange cream flavored, if you can find them. See my note above.)
  • 5 oz white chocolate or white vanilla candy melts
  • 5 cups rice chex cereal, divided in 2 parts
  • 3/4 cup orangesicle cake mix, toasted
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

1. Put 2 1/2 cups rice chex cereal into a medium sized bowl.
2. Slowly melt the orange candy melts in the microwave, stopping it every 30 seconds or so to make sure it doesn’t burn.
3. Add melted candy melts to chex cereal and lightly stir to coat evenly. Be careful to not break the chex cereal too much.
4. Add the dry creamsicle cake mix to the covered chex cereal and lightly stir to coat evenly. You could add the chex cereal and cake mix to a ziplock bag, then shake, but save yourself the bag.
5. Repeat the same process with the white chocolate and remaining chex cereal, but substitute the powdered sugar for the creamsicle cake mix.
6. Allow both flavors to dry and combine.
