These Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Footballs are made with eggless cookie dough and are the perfect dessert for football watching over the next few weeks – packed with playoff and championship games!

I haven’t talked much about the Carolina Panthers this season. Honestly there hasn’t been that much to talk about. They had kind of lousy season with lots of injuries. And we’ve been so busy, I haven’t even gotten to go to a game this year. We were in town for one and the hubs went, but I was visiting with a friend who was in town from Australia.
Crazy enough though, our division was all lousy and now the Panthers are in the playoffs! We cheered them on last Saturday and we’ll be doing the same thing this Saturday. And if they win again, we’ll be cheering them on while eating even more of these cute little footballs.
Panther football is kind of a big deal in my family. My older brother is a Falcons fan, but he’s on his own. Though the hubs and I live in Atlanta now, I grew up in Charlotte.
When the Panthers became a team back in 1995, my dad became a PSL owner and we started going to games every week. Their first year, they didn’t have a stadium built yet so the played their home games at Clemson stadium. My dad drove us to all of them from Charlotte – about 2 hours each way.
I could’ve cared less at first. I was in fifth grade. But by the second year, I was fan. I was also in love with Kerry Collins – the Panther’s first quarterback. 🙂 Panthers football was also one of the first ways I learned to relate to my dad.
It’s now such a big thing, my dad wouldn’t miss a game unless he literally couldn’t walk. And even then – we’ve ridden the handicapped elevator up to the seats before. 🙂
My parents have been tailgating so long, they’ve got it mastered. Even when I’m not there a few of my friends, who regularly go to games, tailgate with my family. I was getting text messages with pictures of all of them at the tailgate last week before the game. #jealous
Too bad I wasn’t in town. I could’ve brought these cute little cookie dough footballs. My mom would’ve been thrilled. She’s always asking for easy football treats she can make for tailgating.
And while I love them as footballs, you could really turn this cookie dough into balls, or any other shape.
The recipe is made much like making any other cookie dough, but without leaveners and eggs. The dough is fairly thick, so it’s easy to work with. After making the dough and shaping it into footballs, it’s best to refrigerate it so that they’re firm for dipping in chocolate.
The hardest part of making these is probably the dipping. I recommend using a good chocolate, such as candiquick. It melts really smoothly, making the dipping a much easier job. You could also use the Wilton brand candy melts, or almond bark. I just melt it right in a bowl.
I like to use a toothpick to dip my footballs in the chocolate. I decided putting the toothpick in at an angle worked best. It’s a little trickier on a toothpick – you have to have some patience. But it works. I stick the dough into the bowl with the chocolate, spoon chocolate over it, then use the toothpick to tap the side of the bowl and shake off the excess chocolate.
Another option is to use a fork. My friend Dorothy made a great video that you can check out if you want to try that method – How to Dip Candy and Truffles Video Tutorial.
The chocolate dries pretty quickly then you can add some football strings and they are ready to go! Seriously, could they be any cuter?

A little on the sweet side. Needed something more. I think maybe some more butter and some salt. I think I’ll use Toll house dough for this next time.
These were cute, easy to make, and taste yummy. A perfect treat for the Super Bowl. Your toothpick method worked perfectly for dipping them. I actually got 34 footballs out of the batch, not the expected 22-24…and I did use a tablespoon to measure the dough. Obviously this isn’t a bad thing…just mentioning for other people if they were thinking about making more than a single batch…they may not need to.
Awesome! So glad you enjoyed them!
This recipe looks amazing. If I left them out for about 8 hours will they melt or just get soft.
They shouldn’t melt, unless they are in a hot environment.
Do you need to store these in the refrigerator?
Yes
The chocolate football is so cute! I will try it for my mom. She loves chocolate a lot. Thanks for your sharing.
Do you have to treat the flour in anyway prior to using it in the recipe?
I would use your best judgment on that. Given the issues in recent years, it may be best to toast the flour.
I was looking forward to making these for the Super Bowl this Sunday because they look so awesome 🙂 However, my dilemma is that I’m in Canada and it’s impossible to find Candiquick here….any suggestions on a replacement?
Any other chocolate candy coating would be fine.
These look great! I have a question though. For the football laces what is a substitute I could use for the candy quick?
I’m planning on making these tonight but I don’t have candiquick and I’m trying to avoid going to the store ????
Thanks!
Candiquick is a brand of baking melting chocolate that dries hard. Other substitutions would be almond bark, wilton candy melts or ghirardelli baking melts. I hope that helps!
Beautifully put together, Lindsay. I remember having one of these at one of my colleague’s place a year ago, and I’ve been searching for the recipe ever since. Your procedure seems to be very easy to follow. I’ll try it tonight at home with the wifey. Thanks again! 🙂
Regards,
Charles
Hi ,, thanks for the recipe you made. It’s so good and I’ll try it at home soon
Amazing! My husband said he cd eat them all night!
Good afternoon, could you write the recipe in grams
Awesome idea! So yummy! Thanks for sharing. My first time on your blog 🙂
Some yummy recipe. Very interesting and eye catching. I have learnt a lot about cake preparation technique in this article and thanks to Lindsay for her generosity. Once again thanks.
Hey! I see you are using salted butter… If I use unsalted, how much salt would I need to add to compensate? Trying to avoid a store run…
Thanks!
Use 1/4 tsp of salt. 🙂
Making these today! Do you store them in the fridge? On the counter?
I usually store them in the fridge and serve them at room temperature.
Is it absolutely necessary to use dark brown sugar?? Can I substitute the 1/2cup of dark brown sugar with 1/2cup Light instead?
Yes, you can.
What happens if you bake them first, let them cool and then dip them? I don’t like cookie dough, I know I’m nuts. Thanks, Gina
I haven’t tried it but it’d likely spread and not hold the football shape.
My wife really loves Chocolate and I am looking for great recipe to make for her. Will try your recipe at tomorrow. Thank for sharing it!

While my Packers aren’t in it anymore (that Seahawks game was torture) I’d still love to make these for our Super Bowl Bake Sale. However I’m wondering, if it’s ok to use all light brown sugar as I don’t have time to run out to the store?
Yes, you can use all brown sugar. And I hear you – my Panthers lost to the Seahawks too – brutal!

Hello,
I was looking forward to making these for the Super Bowl this Sunday because they look so awesome 🙂 However, my dilemma is that I’m in Canada and it’s impossible to find Candiquick here….any suggestions on a replacement?
Thank you 🙂
Yes, definitely. Do you have access to Wilton Candy melts or almond bark? Both of those would be great replacements and are similar products. If neither of those are available, you can use chocolate chips and add 1-2 tbsp of vegetable shortening to thin it out and make it better for dipping.
These are adorable! I was wondering if they can be made ahead of time and frozen? If not, how long would they last?
I would think they’d be fine frozen, it’d probably just be best to defrost them in the fridge. You could also make the cookie dough and freeze those, then dip them in chocolate when you’re ready. They’ll probably be fine unfrozen for at least 3-4 days.

I’ve made little footballs with a peanut butter filling before. Of course, being a life long Redskin fan, we have not had much to celebrate since Dan Snyder bought the team years ago 🙁 I love the idea of using cookie dough. All your treats are always so beautiful!
Thanks Annette! The peanut butter sounds great too!
Sooooo stink’ adorable!
Thanks Julie! 🙂
Lindsay, these little footballs are adorable! I live in Charlotte and am also a Panther’s fan. Hopefully this weekend’s game will be a good one for us, but if not, I can make these and drown my sorrows in chocolate chip cookie dough footballs!
Yes! Let’s go Panthers! 🙂
These are the cutest cookie dough bites ever, Lindsay! My husband is a huge football fan, actually a huge sports fanatic in general. We’re big Bears’ fans, although they tanked out this season long ago! 🙂 These are such a great treat to snack on during the games! Pinned!
These are so incredibly cute! What a fun little game snack.
oh my goodness! we are a family of football FANS, and these will be the perfect weekend treat
These little footballs make me so happy! We’re starting to share our football treats tomorrow! Love these!
